This site will include all the information relevant to the debaters, parents, judges, sponsors and public interested in IACA Debate Tournament.
Debating skills help in creative thinking, improved strategic analysis, timely and better decision making in a group environment to solve problems that affect few people to large populations.
Indians had free exchange of ideas from its inception of civilization. There is a well established debating form (Nyaya Sutras & Tarka ) as a school of thought in Indian Philosophy. Many of our religious teachings are taught in an interrogation format (eg. Yaksha Prashna , Yama & Savitri or Yama & Nachiketa ) and exchange of conversation format (eg. Bhagavad Gita ) between people, between student & teacher or the GOD and his disciple. Famous debates of Sri Sankaracharya and Mandana Mishra, the Buddhist Scholar with his wife Saraswati Devi as the judge are well known in the history of India. Varanasi was the capital of spiritual debates and philosophical discussions for thousands of years.
Debating and argumentation skills of Indians are chronicled by Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen in his book “Argumentative Indian“.
Rest of this blog will include different debate formats and how parents and students can improve this skill. In the mean time check why debate? and parents guide to debating posts derived from the Alpharetta High debate team.
